Exciting Finish

Well another U.S. Open is in the history books and what a great tournament it was. I feel for Rocco Mediate, he had Tiger on the ropes and just couldn't finish the job. I sure was pulling for him to do it, I like to see the underdog do well, but what can you do. I'm sure the several hundred thousand dollars in his bank account will ease the pain. Honestly, I am not the biggest Woods fan around, but he is definitely an awesome golfer. I'm going to wait til he breaks Nicklaus' record of 18 majors though before I will call him the best ever. I'm sure a lot of people think I'm crazy for saying that, but that's how the two of them should be measured. I saw a stat on the coverage that showed the number of top tens in majors. Nicklaus had 73 and Woods has 28. I believe Nicklaus finished runner up 20 times in majors. Those are tremendous stats that show just how dominant and consistent Nicklaus was and are numbers that Woods will never approach, but if he wins 19 or more, I guess he will be the best ever. Also, it appears that others are closing the gap on Tiger, because he's not winning by 8-12 shots anymore, he's having to work hard right to the finish. We'll see what happens in the coming months and years.

Great job Rocco, thanks for the exciting day and week of golf.

U.S. Open starts tomorrow

Well everyone tomorrow is the start of another U.S Open Golf Championship. It's kinda cool for me that its at Torrey Pines in San Diego because it will be telecast here in the eastern time zone in prime time. So I'll be watching live golf for a couple of hours after its dark here. So what about Tiger Woods? It'll be interesting to see how he comes back in his first tournament since his knee surgery. From what I've seen he says he's ready to go, but walking 7600+ yds. each day, I've got to believe it will have have an effect on his swing at some point. I know a lot of people think he's superman and all, but he is only human and I think he is going to struggle a bit. Not to say he'll miss the cut or anything, but he won't win.

I'm going to have to go with Mickelson. He's been so close and being that it's basically in his backyard, I think lefty is going to finally win his first Open. Should be interesting seeing Tiger and Phil paired in the first two rounds, maybe they'll play together on the weekend. I'm sure a lot of people, NBC included, would like to see that. I'm a lefty myself and so I am a little biased here, but I just think it's his time. I have tried to watch him over the years and emulate his golf swing, but I can't figure out what the secret is to a great golf swing.

Anyway, I'm going to wrap it up for now. I plan on making new posts as the tournament progresses. Love to hear any comments, picks etc.
