An Easy Way to Cure a Golf Slice

An Easy Way to Cure a Golf Slice
By Lawrence Bredenkamp

The one question all golfers ask is; "Is there an easy way to cure a golf slice?" It seems at one point in every golfer's life we are inflicted with the dreaded slice and then spend a fortune trying to get rid of it.

The harder we try the more pronounced the slice becomes. Eventually it becomes such a problem that it plays on the mind and thinking about it does not help the rest of your game.
To cure a golf slice you really need to understand what causes the ball to slice.
It is vitally important that you can distinguish between:

  • What Causes a ball to slice and

  • What causes you to do whatever it is you do to cause the ball to slice.

I hope that makes sense.

Put another way the ball slices for only one reason but it is your action that creates the two things that are needed to cause a ball to slice.

The two things that have to be present for a ball to slice are:

  1. An out-to-in swing path and

  2. An open club face through impact.

There is no way the ball can slice unless both these factors are present.

The easiest way to cure a golf slice is to change the angle of the club face through impact. Try the following;

With your normal swing address the ball with a closed club face. I want you to exaggerate this (really close the face) so that it looks ridiculous as you prepare to take your shot. Now using your normal in-to-out swing go ahead and hit the ball. Voila! You've just cured your slice and replaced it with a pull. If not you did something wrong or different to what you normally do in terms of your swing.

Repeat the exercise but open the club face slightly and play the shot again. Keep doing this until you find the point where the club face is square through impact. If you have done everything correctly and maintained your usual out-to-in swing path you will have got rid of the pull shot and now have a nice little fade. That was easy wasn't it?

Practice this fade until you automatically place the club face square to the target. At this point you may find that you are quite happy with the fade and need go no further. Lots of pros actually prefer the fade.

If however you want to hit a draw the exercise becomes a little bit harder because the draw requires an in-to-out swing path with a square club face through impact.

The easiest way to develop an in to out swing path is through ultra slow motion drills so that you can train your muscles to the right movement. This is a bit like sports teams walking through set movements until they are comfortable enough to attempt them at higher speeds. These drills are practiced over and over until they become second nature.

You will have to do the same to break the habit of an out-to-in swing path.

Try starting off with a three quarter back swing and concentrating on making sure that your right elbow remains in contact with your chest throughout the backswing and the downswing. Do it in ultra slow motion to get a feel for what it should be. Do this every day for a week in slow motion before attempting to do it a little faster.

Increase the speed slightly each week so that after a while it feels natural to you.
Finally you can try it with a golf ball! Hey I never said curing your golf slice was going to be a quick fix. I promised to show you an easy way to cure a golf slice and now you've decided you want to learn to draw it!

Seriously though if you want to cure a golf slice getting it to a controllable fade is more than acceptable, but for that extra distance you need to work on getting a draw going.

By doing the above drills anybody will be able to cure a golf slice. And if you learn the different ball flight laws you will soon learn how to play a variety of shots. This will give you more control over your game - something you won't have till you cure that golf slice.

Now wasn't that an easy way to cure a golf slice?

Snakebit Sergio: Will he ever win a major?

Padraig Harrington won the 90th PGA Championship Sunday in thrilling fashion, holding off Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis. Harrington's clutch putting down the stretch was the difference and the reason why he has now won the season's last two majors. After hitting his second at 16 into the water and making bogey, Garcia missed a four footer for birdie on 17 after putting his tee shot inside Harrington's ten footer, which he made for birdie. Garcia's bogey at 18 sealed the deal for Harrington to become the first European to win the PGA Championship since 1930.

So what is going on with Sergio? Granted he did win the Players Championship this year, but do you remember his comments at the trophy presentation? He thanked Tiger Woods for not being there. Remember Woods was out with knee injury that turned out to be much worse than anyone really knew. It appears Sergio needs to work on the mental side of his game. I know these guys are professionals and they all work on the fundamental parts of their games with golf swing coaches and they also work with sports psychologists on the mental side. Sergio obviously needs to do some work there. I'm going to stop short of calling him a choker, because he is still only 28 years old, but he has to work on this part of his game if he ever wants to win a major or multiple majors.

Phil Mickelson was 34 when he won his first major and Harrington 35, so there is definitely time for Sergio Garcia to make his mark if he gets his mental game under control.

Exciting Finish

Well another U.S. Open is in the history books and what a great tournament it was. I feel for Rocco Mediate, he had Tiger on the ropes and just couldn't finish the job. I sure was pulling for him to do it, I like to see the underdog do well, but what can you do. I'm sure the several hundred thousand dollars in his bank account will ease the pain. Honestly, I am not the biggest Woods fan around, but he is definitely an awesome golfer. I'm going to wait til he breaks Nicklaus' record of 18 majors though before I will call him the best ever. I'm sure a lot of people think I'm crazy for saying that, but that's how the two of them should be measured. I saw a stat on the coverage that showed the number of top tens in majors. Nicklaus had 73 and Woods has 28. I believe Nicklaus finished runner up 20 times in majors. Those are tremendous stats that show just how dominant and consistent Nicklaus was and are numbers that Woods will never approach, but if he wins 19 or more, I guess he will be the best ever. Also, it appears that others are closing the gap on Tiger, because he's not winning by 8-12 shots anymore, he's having to work hard right to the finish. We'll see what happens in the coming months and years.

Great job Rocco, thanks for the exciting day and week of golf.

U.S. Open starts tomorrow

Well everyone tomorrow is the start of another U.S Open Golf Championship. It's kinda cool for me that its at Torrey Pines in San Diego because it will be telecast here in the eastern time zone in prime time. So I'll be watching live golf for a couple of hours after its dark here. So what about Tiger Woods? It'll be interesting to see how he comes back in his first tournament since his knee surgery. From what I've seen he says he's ready to go, but walking 7600+ yds. each day, I've got to believe it will have have an effect on his swing at some point. I know a lot of people think he's superman and all, but he is only human and I think he is going to struggle a bit. Not to say he'll miss the cut or anything, but he won't win.

I'm going to have to go with Mickelson. He's been so close and being that it's basically in his backyard, I think lefty is going to finally win his first Open. Should be interesting seeing Tiger and Phil paired in the first two rounds, maybe they'll play together on the weekend. I'm sure a lot of people, NBC included, would like to see that. I'm a lefty myself and so I am a little biased here, but I just think it's his time. I have tried to watch him over the years and emulate his golf swing, but I can't figure out what the secret is to a great golf swing.

Anyway, I'm going to wrap it up for now. I plan on making new posts as the tournament progresses. Love to hear any comments, picks etc.

Welcome to my blog

Hello to everyone in the blogging community!

This is my first post to my new blog. The first of many more to come. I am learning so much right now about blogging and internet marketing and sometimes feel a little overwhelmed, but that's okay because I know in the long run it will pay off big time!

I write from the Motor City (actually a suburb of Detroit) and am preparing for another big sports night. Why NBA and NHL can get it straight, so that two teams in the same city don't have to play on the same night this far into the playoffs, I don't know. Last Saturday night, the Pistons, Red Wings and Tigers all played and before sellout crowds. I guess it's a good way to deal with some of the serious economic issues that are plaguing my state and the whole country.

As I mentioned earlier, I am new to all this and I am working with some good people that are helping me to get things up and running. I also am looking forward and encourage anyone reading this to make comments, suggestions, etc. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

The proliferation of the internet is a great thing, as you all know, with the wealth of information that is available. Just today, we had our first 85 degree day here and I decided to turn on my ceiling fan. I noticed that the blades were pretty dirty and needed to be cleaned. After doing that, I wondered which way should the fan rotate in the summer to be effective. I knew there was a reverse switch on it, but wasn't sure which way it should go. Well I Googled it of course, and got my answer. Just an example of the ease of the internet to find what you need to know.

Well it's time to go cheer on my teams, hope to hear input from all of you out there and I will talk to you again soon.

Regards,
Chuck
